The digital broadcasting changeover continues worldwide, this time it's India's national broadcaster, Prasar Bharati planning to introduce HDTV by 2010, and go all-digital by 2015. The target event is the 2010 Commonwealth Games in Delhi, while other nations focus on readying themselves for the Olympics or World Cup. The report indicates the country's information & broadcasting ministry is already behind in phase one of its digitization plans, but hopefully they'll have things ready in the next 1050 days.

Review Of Wolfdale 3GHz E8400

The guys over at expreview got their hands on a 45nm Intel Wolfdale dual core E8400 clocked at 3.0GHz.

They reviewed the new part and put it up against the Conroe based E6850. The results are 2-3 percent better than those of its 65nm predecessor, but the new CPU is a lot cooler and under load it draws around 10 percent less power.

When overclocked to 3600MHz, the Wolfdale runs at 46ºC, while the Conroe heats up to 58ºC. On stock clocks, under load, the Wolfdale works at just 33ºC and the Conroe part ends up at 46ºC. Basically, a Wolfdale overclocked to 3.6GHz generates as much heat as a Conroe at 3.0GHz, which sounds impressive.Check out some benchmarks below.

After Nforce 780i Its Time For 790i

Just weeks after Nvidia launches its Nforce 780i chipset, the first chipset to officially support Triple SLI, Nvidia will follow up with its DDR3 chipset with Triple SLI support.

The Nforce 790i is on track for a January announcement and this new chipset will bring two unique features, support for 1,600MHz FSB CPUs such as QX9770 and DDR3 memory.

This will make the Nforce 790i a real competitor to Intel's X48 chipset which is scheduled for an announcement at about the same time. DDR3 is still overpriced, but people like the sound of 1,800 MHz DDR3 speeds, but unfortunately this super high speed doesn’t really translates to real world performance figures.

The Nforce 780i should support 1,600MHz FSB CPUs, but you will have to overclock the board as officially the Nforce 780i as well as the X38 chipsets are not suppose to go over 1,333MHz.

AMD Tri-core Phenoms Coming In February

The Phenom launch may not have been great but AMD is promising bigger, better things for 2008 and one would be the release of triple-core processors. These CPUs are basically your average Agena quad-core part with one core disabled (read dead and gone) and should offer Intel's offer a run for its money. The tri-cored Phenoms codenamed Toliman are said to make their debut in February 2008 most likely after AMD releases the 9700 and 9900 quads.

The release of tri-core CPUs will see AMD have two products available, clocked at 2.5 and 2.3 GHz, each with their very own 89W TDP. Following these two processors, by the end of Q2 2008 AMD will release two dual-core Kuma processors which still don't have a determined clock. As for the competition, Intel will unleash its dual and quad-cored 45nm CPUs as soon as January.

3G iPhone Schedule For 2008

Apple Inc. will introduce a version of the iPhone next year that can download from the Internet at a faster rate, AT&T Inc. Chief Executive Officer Randall Stephenson said.

The device will operate on third-generation wireless networks, Stephenson said today at a meeting of the Churchill Club in Santa Clara, California. San Antonio-based AT&T is the exclusive carrier for the iPhone in the U.S.

``You'll have it next year,'' Stephenson said in response to a question about when the 3G iPhone would debut. He said he didn't know how much more the new version will cost than the existing model, which sells for $399. Apple Chief Executive Officer Steve Jobs ``will dictate what the price of the phone is,'' he said.

Jobs said in September that the iPhone's battery life would be too short if it supported faster networks. The handset has eight hours of battery life, and 3G chips are ``real power hogs,'' he said at a news conference in London.

``We've got to see the battery lives for 3G get back up into the five-plus-hour range,'' he said. ``Hopefully we'll see that late next year.''

Three Intel Nehalem Processors On The Road

A Japanese source reports Intel is working on three versions of the Nehalem core: the Bloomfield, Lynnfield and Havendale.

Bloomfield will be introduced first and will be the high-end model, Lynnfield is a mainstream part and Havendale will be Intel's first CPU with integrated graphics.

The Bloomfield processor will be released late next year and will feature four cores, an integrated memory controller with triple-channel DDR3 memory support, Quick Path Interconnectand some other features. Bloomfield will use the Tylersburg and ICH-10 chipsets which supports two x16 PCI Express 2.0 slots.

The cheaper Lynnfield processor will arrive in the second half of 2009. This will also be a quad-core processor but it will only feature dual-channel DDR3 memory support and will have one integrated PCI Express 2.0 controller so you can't use it for more than one graphics card. Lynnfield will use the single-chip Ibexpeak chipset which will be a PCH (Platform Controller Hub). This chip doesn't use Quick Path Interconnect but the old DMI chipset interconnect.

Intel is also working on Havendale, a low-end part with integrated graphics but there will also be support for a PCI Express 2.0 graphics card. Havendale will be a dual-core processor.

Bloomfield uses LGA1366 while the other two processors use LGA1160.

Intel Foxhollow Platform Disclosed

DVHardware reports about the Intel Foxhollow entry-level platform which will start sampling in Q3 2008. The Foxhollow platform features a cheap dual-core processor with integrated graphics and uses the single-chip Ibexpeak chipset.

Havendale is a desktop processor while Auburndale will be used in notebooks. Both CPUs are dual-core, with 4MB shared cache, integrated dual-channel DDR3 memory controller and integrated graphics. Intel claims these new integrated graphics will perform ten times better than their current IGP solutions.

The PCH will house things like eight PCIe lanes, support for up to four PCI slots, the Gigabit Ethernet MAC, display interface controllers, I/O controllers, RAID and SATA controllers, USB 2.0 controller etc. This is pretty much what the ICH is doing today bar a few exceptions such as the display interface controller. The reason why this is in the chipset and not in the CPU, is because it has to physically connect to the ports on the motherboard.

Now is the time to think specially people in IT Jobs.Looking into the market trends the three position in IT sector are in the driving seat - Computer Systems Analysts,Network And Database Analysts and Software Developers. All these positions require very high skills and so, many recruitment are available for those highly skilled positions which are meant for only those who have some years of experience in the related fields so that the companies can save their funds which would otherwise been invested in training a trainee. There are many online job portal sites available which are dedicated for IT Job Search across the globe. But the present market trend in not in favour of IT sector as the "Monster Employment Index" depicts.

Monster Employment Index - Oct'07

If the present trend continues then people have to think another alternatives. The reason behind this continuous depreciation in the IT jobs is because the companies are moving to countries with English speaking lower cost workers like India and China. So unless the government intervenes, English speaking countries with low labor cost and well educated people will pull high paying jobs out of the United States and Europe.

After Gmail The Next May Be Gdrive

Google Inc. wants to offer consumers a new way to store their files on its hard drives, in a strategy that could accelerate a shift to Web-based computing and intensify the Internet company's competition with Microsoft Corp.

Google is preparing a service that would let users store on its computers essentially all of the files they might keep on their personal-computer hard drives -- such as word-processing documents, digital music, video clips and images, say people familiar with the matter. The service could let users access their files via the Internet from different computers and mobile devices when they sign on with a password, and share them online with friends. It could be released as early as a few months from now, one of the people said.

The Mountain View, California company plans to provide some free storage, with additional storage allotments available for a fee, say the people familiar with the matter. Planned pricing isn't known.

Nvidia's G96 Is The Next

Nvidia's biggest problem now is that they don't have a card that can run against the Radeon 3850. This Radeon is significantly faster than any 8600 GTS, as even overclocked cards can't compete and it cost about €150 for the 256MB version.

Nvidia lost this highly profitable market segment to ATI and it won't have a new chip to challenge ATI until March 2008. This is the time when G96 should be born. The G92 based 8800 GT is simply in another league and with prices between €220 and €250 it fights and wins over the HD 3870.

We don’t know many details as yet, just that the chip is coming and we hope that it is finally the time to move away from a 128-bit memory interface and go for the faster but more expensive 256-bit memory interface. The time will tell.

Phenom X3 Simulation Tested, Faster Than X2

PC Gaming Hardware in Germany has what appears to be the first ever Phenom X3 benchmarks, but what they've gone and done is dissable one of the three cores on a Phenom X4 9600 clocked at 2.3GHz. This might be something close to what the real deal will perform like, but we'll just have to wait and see.

Their simulated X3 processor is faster than their 2.3GHz Athlon 64 X2 4400+ and another simulated processor, a Phenom X2 at 2.3GHz, which in other words was the same Phenom X4 9600 with two cores dissabled.

It didn't come close an Intel Q6600 that was also used for comparitive testing and the benchmarks were limited to WinRAR, Cinebench R10 and 3DMark06's CPU test. As everyone have already guessed by now, three cores are faster than two, but not as fast as four, so there you go.

Windows Server 2008 ,45 Times Faster Than 2003

It's not unheard of for some of the earliest adopters of Microsoft's Vista this year to compare the experience to swimming in wet cement -- slow and not very pretty.

But word is filtering out of the Redmond, Wash.-based software giant that indicates its new server could be considerably better. Ward Ralston at the Windows Server Division Weblog reports that "our MSN group who is dogfooding Windows Server 200 RC0" has achieved the kind of testing results that might prompt a double-take. In a side-by-side between Windows Server 2003 and Windows Server 2008, the group set out to transfer 10.8 GB of "VirtualEarth Stitch files" from one server to another, and back again.

On Windows Server 2003, the data took five hours, 40 minutes and 30 seconds to transfer once, and more than six hours to transfer back again.
On Windows Server 2008, the same data took seven minutes and 45 seconds to transfer one way, and eight minutes and 10 seconds to transfer back. The Microsoft people spare you the task of doing all that math: "The improvement observed was ~45 times faster over windows 2003."

If the numbers are consistent and no other glitches come up (this software has been in beta for a few years now), it could prove compelling when it is launched - - an event now slated for the first quarter of next year.

Neither Vista Nor Leopard Are Bulletproof

Microsoft has been beating the old drum of Windows Vista as the most secure Windows operating system on the market since it hit the selves. Similarly, Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard, the successor of Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger is applauded for taking on the legacy of a high standard for security synonymous with the Apple brand. But at the same time, both operating systems are virtually impotent against social engineering. And there is little that Microsoft and Apple can do about this. Neither of the companies can produce a patch, or set up a mitigation against social engineering attacks. This because social engineering relies on exploiting the end user and not a vulnerability or a bug in the software.

"So where is the weak point in your network? I think there’s a common expression used to describe it – the problem exists between keyboard and chair. Lately, more attacks have relied upon social engineering to infect users rather than automated exploitation of vulnerabilities in network services. Social engineering is nothing new, but the sophistication of some of these attacks has been increasing. Three prime examples of this come to mind," explained Marc Fossi, Symantec Security Response Engineer.

Windows XP SP3 Have Performance Edge Over Vista

After a disappointing showing by Windows Vista SP1 (see previous post), we were pleasantly surprised to discover that Windows XP Service Pack 3 (v.3244) delivers a measurable performance boost to this aging desktop OS. Testing with OfficeBench showed an ~10% performance boost vs. the same configuration running under Windows XP w/Service Pack 2.

OfficeBench Completion Times
(In Seconds - Lower is Better)

Note: As with our Vista SP1 testing, we used the identical Dell XPS M1710 test bed with 2GHz Core 2 Duo CPU, 1GB of RAM and discrete nVidia GeForce Go 7900GS video.

Since SP3 was supposed to be mostly a bug-fix/patch consolidation release - unlike w/Vista SP1, Microsoft made no promises of improved performance for XP - the unexpected speed boost comes as a nice bonus. In fact, XP SP3 is shaping-up to be a "must have" update for the majority of users who are still running Redmond's not-so-latest and greatest desktop OS.

Of course, none of this bodes well for Vista, which is now more than 2x slower than the most current builds of its older sibling. Suffice to say that performance-minded users will likely choose to stick with the now even speedier Windows XP - at least until more "Windows 7" information becomes publicly available.

Windows Vista = Windows ME "Reloaded?" You be the judge!

Apple To Sell Unlocked iPhones In Germany

While North American iPhone users are struggling against a sea of firmware updates to use their devices on non-AT&T networks, and making enough headway to break the 1.1.2 firmware before its official release, those in Germany are getting a chance to buy a factory-unlocked phone -- for the not-so-low cost of €999, or approximately 1,500 USD,reports DailyTech.

Deutsche Telekom, the German T-Mobile carrier, had entered an exclusive agreement with Apple in September to sell the iPhone in Germany, but promptly found themselves the target of a court injunction from Vodafone Inc. Germany carries laws similar to France with regard to telecommunications that prohibit mobile phones being tied to a specific carrier or plan.

As expected, not all of the iPhone's features -- such as Visual Voicemail or Chat Texting -- will be available on unlocked units. With reduced functionality, a price tag of nearly a thousand euros, and the potential for a 3G-enabled model in 2008, the offering of unlocked iPhones seems little more than a concession to legality than a genuine offer of good faith.

Intel's G35 Benchmark Results

OC Workbench published 3DMark06 and 3DMark05 benchmark results of a Intel G35 based motherboard.

We ran a simple test 3dmark05 and 3dmark06 on our Intel G35 mainboard with 2GB DDR2-800 on X6800. The results are much better than the previous G33 chipset. It was tested on VISTA Ultimate.

Here are the screen shots. 3Dmark05 scored 1196 and 3Dmark06 scored 651.

On ECS G33 mainboard, 3Dmark05 scored 839 while 3Dmark06 scored 326.

If you were to compare with the ATi RS600 chipset, the G35 is still far off. On a similarly configured system (XP), 3Dmark05 scored 1170 and 3Dmark06 scored 538. At least, we see that G35 is able to do better in 3Dmark06 with a score of 651 against 538 on the ATi RS600.

Nvidia Set To Launch Intel-Based nForce 780i Chipset In December

According to Digitimes,Nvidia is planning to launch its Intel-based nForce 780i chipset in December this year, however mass shipments will not occur until January next year, according to sources at motherboard makers.

The nForce 780 SLI chipset will be available to two forms, the nForce 780i SLI (C72 XE) supporting Intel and nForce 780a SLI (C72 P) supporting AMD, noted the sources.

The nForce 780i will target Intel's X38 chipsets as its major competitor. It will support PCI Express 2.0 and 3-way SLI technology with three PCI Express x16 slots. Motherboard pricing will be around US$200, noted the sources.

With most of the features of the 780i similar to those of the X38 with the added benefit of 3-way SLI, some motherboard makers expect the chipset to have a good chance of performing well in the market. The chipset will also feature Nvidia's ESA (enthusiast system architecture) to monitor the PC hardware status, added the sources

In related news, Nvidia's support for DDR3 will show up in the first quarter next year, according to the sources.

Microsoft vs Google ?? gOS vs Windows ??

Microsoft's rivalry with Google heated up considerably this past year when rumors surfaced that Google might release its own operating system to compete with Windows. Has Google finally jumped into the fray with its own OS?

Unfortunately, no; gOS is not a "Google OS" nor is it affiliated with Google (though Desktop Linux has reported that Google has seen gOS and approved inclusion of the Google toolbar with the operating system).

gOS is developed by Good OS LLC out of Los Angeles. It's based on Ubuntu Linux 7.10 and runs the Enlightenment E17 interface instead of KDE or Gnome. Despite not being created by Google, the focus of gOS is Google's online applications such as GMail, Google News, Google Maps, Google Calendar, YouTube, etc. It's a neat concept for a Linux distribution, but how practical is it?

AMD's AM3 With DDR3 Debuts In 2009

At the last AMD’s event in Warsaw, AMD has promised us the Stars, at least two of them in the next two years.

The current Star is AMDs platform and it will be able to cope with AM2+ CPUs. It supports DDR2 from 400 to 1066, it also supports both 45 and 65 nanometre CPUs with dual power processing lanes, the VID’s are serial and parallel and the diode does the thermal monitor.

The socket and the platform can provide up to 110W to a CPU and an additional 20W to Northbridge.

Another Star, that I’ve mentioned more than a year ago, will sit in socket AM3 and it supports Hypertransport 3. It supports DDR3 1333, dual processor power planes and serial VIDs. It is scheduled for 1H 2009.

It has a new thermal monitor and calls it Thermal sence interface (TSI) and just as AM2+ based Stars it might need a 8 Mbit bios. It will have the same maximum power delivery.

Windows XP Update Nearly Out

More than 15,000 beta testers are playing with Microsoft's SP3 update.

Microsoft says that the update to the six-year-old operating system is due out in final form in the first half of next year. It plans to release a public test version of the service pack, but it has not come up with a date yet.

The release was expected in 2006, but was pushed out in favour of Vista work. The update is focused largely on things such as bug fixes and performance improvements rather than new features.

HD DVD Three-Layer Disc To Hold 51GB

The DVD forum has approved a new version of the triple-layer HD DVD disc standard. The new specification allows manufacturers to create HD DVD discs with a capacity of up to 51GB:

The approval of DVD specifications for high density read-only disc [HD DVD-ROM (51G)] part 1 physical specifications, version 2.0, took place during the 40th steering committee meeting on November 15, 2007. Back in September, the DVD Forum also approved version 1.9 specification of 51GB HD DVD media as well as revision 1.0 of triple-layer twin format discs, which can hold up to 30GB of data on its HD DVD side and up to 4.7GB of data on its DVD side.

The new 51GB HD DVD ROM disc has a three-layer structure with each layer storing 17GB of data, which is an advancement in capacity over current ROM discs, which hold 15GB of data in each layer of a single-sided disc. Continued improvement in disc mastering technology has achieved further minimization in the recording pit, supporting a further boost in capacity to 17GB in single layer and a full 51GB on a single-sided triple-layer disc. Toshiba has confirmed the disc structure and its successful operation earlier this year.

Unfortunately it's not clear if tri-layer HD DVDs will be readable by current HD DVD hardware.

ATI Radeon HD 3800 For Mobile

FUDZilla heard mobile versions of ATI's new Radeon HD 3850 and 3870 are expected soon:

Just as Nvidia is planning a mobile G92 version of the Geforce 8800 GT, branded as the 8800M GTX, ATI will introduce its RV670 mobile chip. ATI has a big advantage, as it dissipates less than 80W, at least for the desktop part, but with some optimization and a more modest clock, we might be getting a great mobile GPU at a great price/performance ratio.

Traditionally AMD has to wait for OEMs to change their production cycle and as soon as this happens (in other words, when one of the big OEMs or ODMs (Originl Design Manufacturers)) releases a new machine powered with mobile RV670, AMD will introduce this part.

Xbox 360 Goes 65nm - Consumes Less Power

AnandTech investigates the new 65nm Xbox 360 consoles:

Microsoft just recently dropped the price of its Xbox 360 and around the same time, rumors crept up about a quiet introduction of 65nm CPUs into the bill of materials. The original Xbox 360 manufactured from 2005 up until August of this year all used 90nm chips; the CPU, GPU and eDRAM were all fabbed on a 90nm process, which was state of the art at the time. However, as you've undoubtedly noticed with Intel's recent move to 45nm, 90nm is more than dated now.

A move to 65nm would undoubtedly reduce power consumption, potentially make the console quieter and obviously make it cheaper to produce. With the Xbox 360 there's also another side effect that many surmised would result from a move to 65nm: increased reliability.

The reporter concludes the new 65nm Xbox 360 consoles use a lot less power. In idle the old 90nm Xbox 360 uses 149W while the new 65nm version consumes only 100W. While playing Halo 3 the old console uses 173W and the new 65nm console only 120W.

Windows Vista SP1 RC Released To Beta Testers

Microsoft has released a new beta version of the first service pack for Windows Vista to testers:

Yesterday, Microsoft released a new Release Candidate (RC) build (6001-17042-071107-1618) of SP1 to testers. The latest build weighs in at 434.84MB for the x86 version and 734.3MB for the x64 version.

Testers who already have the previous SP1 beta installed, however, will run into somewhat of a roadblock when it comes to the new RC build.

"Windows Vista SP1 does not support build-to-build upgrades," states Microsoft. "Therefore, if you have installed a previously release build on your machine, you have to uninstall this old build before installing the next build of Windows Vista SP1."

Intel Adds One More 45nm CPU To E8000 Family

Intel will add one more 45nm desktop processor to its E8000 family in January 2008, according to sources at motherboard makers,DigiTimes reports.

In addition to the E8200, E8400 and E8500 processors of the E8000 family, Intel plans to launch the E8190. The CPU will have a frequency of 2.66GHz, L2 cache of 6MB, and FSB of 1333MHz. It will be priced at US$163 in 1000-unit quantities.

Although E8190's specification is similar to that of the E8200, the CPU does not support virtualization or Trust Execution Technology, and will only focus on the OEM market where it will be slightly cheaper when purchased in large volumes, added the sources.

Intel is also planning to launch the Core 2 Duo E5000 family to replace the previous E4000 family in the entry-level market. The first product from the E5000 family will launch in April next year priced at US$133 in 1000-unit quantities. Specifications are still unknown.
