Google Going For iPhone Killer With Dell

There are rumours that Google is planning to launch a mobile phone in partnership with Dell.

Marketing Week, quoting senior industry sources, claims the two companies will reveal their plans at next month’s 3GSM telecoms conference in Barcelona. Google insiders deny an announcement is that close.

There had had been talk of Google launching a “Gphone”, to go up against Apple’s iPhone, but it was not clear how this would come about. Dell has also been planning a move into mobile phones for some time and already makes PDAs so the rumour makes sense.

New iPhone This Summer ?

There may be a new line up of Apple's iPhone this summer as expected by ComputerWorld.

ComputerWorld : At this point, I don't think new markets can get Apple anywhere near 10 million by the end of the year. It has already hit the biggest potential markets. Talks with Chinese carriers haven't really started. And I doubt China would provide a huge market for the iPhone anyway. The iPhone is too expensive for China and, besides, it has already got a bunch of iPhone counterfeit clones for Apple to compete with.

I also don't think new pricing will do the trick, although I am willing to predict that Apple will drop iPhone pricing this year. The cheapskate holdouts aren't going to out-buy the rabid Apple fans and gadget freaks who already own iPhones.

The most likely scenario is that Apple will unveil a new iPhone this summer, or fall at the latest.

This is interesting because to date we have no way to estimate how often Apple plans to refresh the iPhone line with new versions. The iPod Nano is the only Apple player to be refreshed every year like clockwork. The other models vary from 20-month cycles for the Shuffle to the subyear cycles of the Classic.

A new iPhone is likely to offer goodies like 3G, GPS, more software flexibility and fixes for the many small annoyances that some current users complain about.

The only way Apple could possibly feel "confident" of reaching 10 million units by the end of 2008 is if the company were to sell more iPhones during next year's holiday season than it did during the 2007 season. And the only way to do that is to sell to existing users. And the only way to do that is to come out with a new iPhone.

GeForce 9600 GT Benchmarks

It seems like we don't have to wait till the end of February when the most talked Nvidia Geforce 9600GT gets unveiled,as the benchmarks of this new card have started to pop up on the net.

This latest preview test from Chiphell sees two regular G94-powered GeForce 9600 GTS (64 Stream Processors, 512MB GDDR3, 650 MHz core, 1650 MHz shaders, 1800 MHz memory) being coupled with a system consisting of Intel E6850 at 3.0 GHz, a nForce 680i SLI board, 2GB of DDR2-800 memory plus Windows Vista and the infamous ForceWare 171.16 beta driver and benchmarked with Futuremark's 3DMark03, 05 and 06.

A single 9600 GT scored 10036 points in 3DMark06 (default benchmark) while the SLI setup topped 13080, over 900 points over the results of an 8800 Ultra - 12142. In 3DMark05 at 1280x1024 the 9600 GT SLI setup reached 18427 (16141 for the single card) while in 3DMark03 the pair scored just short of 45000.

Considering the price of the Ultra and what the mid-range 9600GT will probably be, it looks as if Nvidia already have a winner on their hands. Keep in mind the 9600GT is still at least a few weeks away and that will give the driver people at Nvidia even more chance to find tune the driver and suck even more performance out of the card.

No Windows 7 In 2009,Microsoft Claims

TC Magazine published that we have to wait till 2011 for Windows 7 and there's no escaping Windows Vista till then.

The hopes and dream of millions of people have been shattered as Microsoft has denied recent claims that the next Windows OS (operating system) will be released as soon as next year. The story was that the Reddish Ringer of swift console death has stepped up the development schedule of Windows 7 and that it could be released as soon as the second half of 2009.

Although people are waving Windows 7 M1 screenshots around, the upcoming OS is claimed to still be in the early stages of development and with a build time of (at least) three years the 2009 deadline will not be met. A safer bet would put Windows 7's release around 2011. To be on the sure side though we might have to wait until 2012. There's no escaping Vista.

Why NVIDIA 9600 GT Delayed ?

The Inquirer has got something which shows the possible reason for the delay of NVIDIA 9600 GT card.

NVIDIA found a small percentage of GeForce 9600 GT boards exhibiting a voltage transient on the NVDD power supply during certain applications. They have reason to believe that this may cause a system hang under certain conditions. In order to provide the most robust and reliable solution possible to NVIDIA's customers they have decided to hold shipments in order to make some minor modifications to reduce the transients.

NVIDIA's engineering team has identified the necessary modifications and they are in the process of verification. I will communicate the exact modifications to you as soon as they have been verified and we will communicate the new shipping schedule in the next few days.

Since we are now running into the Chinese New Year holiday NVIDIA have decided to move the launch date out a week in order to ensure that our partners have enough time to get product on shelves at the time of launch.

***New GeForce 9600 GT launch date is Feb. 21st***

Please make sure that all partners are aware of the new launch date and let me know if you have any questions.

Security Risk : A New Worm Spotted

Today, a new worm has been spotted in the wild and, according to security company Trend Micro, it affects most flavors of the operating system produced by Microsoft, including Windows 98, ME, NT, 2000, XP and Server 2003.

The worm WORM_SILLYFDC.CY has a high damage potential and a high distribution potential, two elements that underline the worm's capability to reach your computer and harm the data stored on it.It can get into your PC while visiting any infected page. However, the worm may also be dropped by another piece of malware, Trend Micro explains.

The main targets of the worm are two important Windows functions: the Automatic Windows Update and the Task Manager. Both features of the operating system are disabled, so the users would not be able to update their Windows version or to check the running processes in order to shut down the infection.

Just like many other recent worms, WORM_SILLYFDC.CY spreads itself through the clean removable drives connected to the computer. Every time a removable drive is plugged into the system, the worm copies an Autorun.inf file to execute itself once the device is connect to another PC.

So,to be on the safer side, update your anti-virus with latest virus definitions and be safe.

Happy Surfing !!

HP Unveils 'Loss-Proof' Laptop

Hewlett-Packard is launching a connected laptop that holds no data locally -- using technology from thin-client specialist Neoware, that it acquired only weeks ago.

"The HP Compaq 6720t mobile thin client is a laptop with no local data residing on it, so it is immune to data loss," said Andrew Gee, sales manager for HP remote client solutions.

The HP device could mark the coming of age of laptop thin clients, said Gee. Although Neoware announced one in 2006 and Wyse launched one in 2007, they have only had a small niche because they have needed special hardware and relied on connections that have not been reliable.

The laptop runs embedded XP, has a 15.4-inch wide screen display and a solid-state disk, so it will run silently and have good battery life. It also has a spill-resistant keyboard, said Gee.

No price has been announced for the laptop yet, but it will be available in the second quarter of this year, said Gee.

HP also launched two thin clients for the desktop -- the t5730 and the t5730, which run XP embedded and Linux, and cost $810 and $615, respectively. Both have AMD chips with ATI graphics cards and include two-screen support: "We're seeing a lot of requirements around multimedia," said Gee. The Windows version has integrated Wi-Fi and can be mounted on the back of HP monitors to save desk space.

AMD Launches New Series Chipsets For China

While the whole world has gotten the Radeon HD 3400 and 3600 series card, AMD's latest releases, the first chipsets with integrated graphics of the series 7 line-up have only been unveiled in China. The move comes so as to get the new boards powered by the chips on the massive Chinese market and leave everyone else waiting until AMD has Hybrid CrossFire all figured out and ready to work with its new cards.

The launch 'party' introduced three chipsets - the AMD 740G, 780V and 780G, all supporting AM2 and AM2+ processors but boasting quite some different features. The lowest end part, the 740G with the Radeon 2100 IGP will only support DirectX 9 and HyperTransport 1.0 while its bigger brother, will both have DX10 capabilities, HT 3.0 and even PCI-Express 2.0.

The 780V will lack the UVD or Hybrid CrossFire, both being features that only the 780G will be able to brag with. The new chipsets are expected to make their world wide debut before the end of the quarter.

Future of Alan Wake's DX10 Support Is Still In Dark

FudZilla got some interesting infos about the most talked game title Alan Wake and its DirectX 10 version. Here's what they got from:

Besides the usual "We haven't announced anything on this yet" when asked about DirectX 10 support, they managed to find out that the upcoming game from Remedy Entertainment called Alan Wake will benefit from quad-core processors. According to the interview, "quad's" will be up to 30 percent faster than dual core processors. Besides the last years blow dealt by Microsoft concerning the fact that Alan Wake is not a 2007 title, another hard punch was aimed at XP users, when it was said that it is best to consider Alan Wake to be a Vista exclusive game.

According to the interview, the so called "The Alan Wake engine" will use the Havok physics engine. When asked about multi-GPU solutions, Markus Maki made an interesting statement that they will "much rather put [their] development efforts to make sure [that] the game runs great on most gamers' systems, those with single GPUs."

As for now, the game will be available for Xbox360 and PC. You can check out the full interview here.

Microsoft announced it will push Internet Explorer 7 through Windows Server Update Services on February 12.

The IE7 upgrade scheduled to roll out via WSUS (Windows Server Update Services) on Feb. 12 was announced last October, when Microsoft said it would no longer require users to prove they owned a legitimate copy of Windows XP before they were allowed to download the newer browser. Microsoft explained that the move was prompted by security concerns.

"Because Microsoft takes its commitment to help protect the entire Windows ecosystem seriously, we're updating the IE7 installation experience to make it available as broadly as possible to all Windows users," said Steve Reynolds, an IE program manager, on a Microsoft company blog in early October. "Internet Explorer 7 installation will no longer require Windows Genuine Advantage validation and will be available to all Windows XP users."

The IE7 Installation and Availability Update was immediately made available for manual downloading and was offered to consumers and small-business users via the Windows Update service in the weeks that followed. Beginning Feb. 12, the new IE7 package will be put into the WSUS pipeline as an Update Rollup package.

"If you have configured WSUS to 'auto-approve' Update Rollup packages, Windows Internet Explorer 7 will be automatically approved for installation after February 12, 2008, and consequently, you may want to take the actions below to manage how and when this update is installed," Microsoft warned in a support document posted to its site. WSUS's default setting for Update Rollups is to not autoapprove them.

Companies or users who don't want IE7 will need to disable the auto-approval rule.

Now Al-Qaida Gets Their Security Software

Terrorist organisation Al-Qaida has released its own flavour of encryption software in a bid to help its members communicate with greater security on the Internet.

Coming under the catchy title Mujahideen Secrets 2, the software has been dubbed the first Islamic program for secure communications through networks with the highest technical level of encoding. Nice to see that they have got the PR spiel all worked out.

The software, available for free on the password-protected Ekhlaas.org site. The first version Mujahideen Secrets was issued in early 2007 by the Global Islamic Media Front, which is not to be confused with the Global Media Front of Islam, or the Islamic Global Front of the Media.

According to News.com, the software aims to ensure secure e-mail and other communications. It is not clear how effective it is, but the earlier version did get a wide distribution.

Intel E8200's Glory May be Short-lived

According to TCMagazine the glory of Intel's E8200 is very short-lived.

The lowest-clocked Wolfdale of this week's release wave, the E8200 is an interesting offer given its specs and price tag but it is already set to be replaced. In Q2 Intel is set to introduce a new Wolfdale CPU, the 2.83 GHz-clocked E8300 and it will take the E8200's place at the $163 price level. After that the E8200's fate is uncertain as a price cut is likely to make it collide with the upcoming E7200 processor which will cost $133. Whatever happens, the Wolfies are most-wanted these days and will probably have that title at least until AMD's tri-core processors are released.

Some Pics of ATI Radeon HD 3650 And HD 3690

As January is slowly crawling towards its end AMD's planned release of more HD 3000 series cards is closing in and the pictures are starting to pop up everywhere.

The Radeon HD 3650 is a lower-mid-range card powered by the 55nm-built RV635 chip which is set to be the replacement of the HD 2600 XT. Boasting 120 Stream Processors, the 3650 will retail at just under $100 and will have 256MB of GDDR3 memory.

There's also some screenshots of Radeon HD 3690 card from Triplex.Featuring a dual-slot cooler, the card has 256MB of GDDR3 memory but is equipped with a (crippled) RV670 chip which has 320 Stream Processors but only a 128-bit memory interface. This card should cost a little over $100 so it looks like a mid-range winner but, given it hasn't bee hear of much until now, it may be a limited edition offer.

Barcelona Fixed, 45 nm To Ramp In H2

TG Daily reports AMD quad-core have been fixed and also that AMD's 45nm CPU to roll out in the second half of this year.

AMD chief executive officer Hector Ruiz today told analysts that the company has fixed a bug that severely impacted the launch of the company’s Opteron and Phenom quad-core processors. According to Ruiz, the bug has been fixed and the fixed B3 stepping CPU “has left the fab”.

Production volume of Barcelona and Phenom quad-core will be about double of the “nearly 400,000 units” that were manufactured during Q4, CFO Bob Rivet noted. On the server side, AMD will focus to get “mid-band power, high volume” quad-core Opterons into the market with higher speeds, 2.5 GHz and above, being scheduled for a Q2 introduction. As previously reported, the higher speed Phenoms will also have to wait: AMD will roll out triple-core Phenoms and 65-watt (low power) quad-core CPUs during Q1. “Higher speeds will follow in Q2”, Meyer stated.

There also was some positive news on the company’s 45 nm progress. Ruiz said that AMD that 45 nm Opterons have been produced and he is “pleased” with the initial result. However, he said that the company is targeting a H2 ramp of the 45 nm generation, which indicates that AMD will miss the originally promised mid-2008 launch of the processors. This statement also contradicts Meyer’s statement from the Q3 2007 earnings call that AMD would begin ramping 45 nm CPUs in H1 2008.

Windows 7 - Successor of Windows Vista in 2H'09

We can expect the Windows 7, previously code-named Blackcomb Vienna the successor of Windows Vista in second half of 2009 according to sources at TG Daily.

Several industry sources have confirmed to TG Daily that a very early version of Windows 7, previously code-named Blackcomb Vienna, already has been shipped to “key partners” as a “Milestone 1” (M1) code drop for validation purposes. A roadmap received by TG Daily indicates that the new operating system will be introduced in the second half of 2009.

While it has generally been believed that Windows 7 was scheduled for a 2010 debut, Microsoft has revised the roadmap and apparently moved up the release date by a few months: A recently distributed roadmap of the OS lists a release to manufacturing in H2 2009. Microsoft declined to comment on this date.

We can have more clarity on when we could see Windows 7 going into production when Microsoft announces Windows Logo Program Changes for Windows 7. According to the policy of the firm, these changes will be announced 18 months prior to the scheduled RTM.

AMD RS780 Chipset Delayed Due to Driver Problem

According to Digitimes we have to wait some time more for the AMD RS780 chipset.Although AMD has already completed the hardware for its next generation IGP chipset, RS780, the company is still waiting on drivers to support its new Hybrid CrossFireX technology. As a result the company has decided to launch the motherboard only in China on January 23, while the launch date in other countries will be set after the driver is complete, according to sources at motherboard makers.

Since Hybrid CorssFireX technology is a major feature of the RS780 chipset, AMD hopes to give the technology the best introduction to the market it can. However, any significant delay in shipments could end up hurting AMD's profits and momentum. Therefore, the company has decided to adopt a strategy of selling the motherboards in certain regions first.

Final Hybrid CrossFireX drivers are expected to be distributed to AMD's partners by the middle of February, with the worldwide launch of the RS780 to take place before the end of February, if all goes well, noted the sources.

ATI Radeon HD 3450 Reviewed

Expreview has the exclusive benchmarks of ATI Radeon HD 3450 128MB.This card will replace the Radeon HD 2400 and is well suited for HTPC systems.

AMD did a very good job in entry/HTPC VGA card segment. Comparing to NVIDIA-ruled mid to High-end market, AMD sells quite well in entry/HTPC market. That’s because the company catch the trend, focus on product’s HD video playback ability. The RV610, HD 2400 becomes many HTPC fans’ first choice. After RV670’s debuting, AMD turn their process tech to 55nm, and preparing to roll out more HD 3000 series cards based on RV6XX GPU and 55nm process.

In 3DMark test Radeon HD 3450 have about 26.73% boost compare to HD 2400 Pro with default frequency. That’s because the higher clock. When we OC Hd 2400 Pro to the same frequency, the performance boost drop to 6.3%. This means the 55nm shrink only brings little boost to the performance. This card is certainly not for exclusive gaming, even though it has 33.3% faster clock than HD 2400 Pro, we have to turn all setting off, and lower the resolution to play today’s new game.

Check out the complete review from here.

Nforce 790i To Be Unveiled In Mid February

Nvidia wants its product to run head to head with Intel. For this Nvidia plans to launch its Nforce 790i DDR3 chipset in the middle of February so as to make its product line ready for the Core 2 Extreme 9770 from day one. Currently Nvidia is only shipping limited numbers of Nforce 780i products and many dislike the fact that this very expensive board only supports DDR2.

The Nforce 790i has two new tricks. It supports DDR3 memory up to 1800MHz speeds and it supports FSB 1600 for the latest generation of Core 2 Extreme quad core CPUs.

This chipset will work just fine with 45nm Core 2 Quad processors and it should launch sometime in the middle of February, together with the GeForce 9600 GT.
