Nvidia wants its product to run head to head with Intel. For this Nvidia plans to launch its Nforce 790i DDR3 chipset in the middle of February so as to make its product line ready for the Core 2 Extreme 9770 from day one. Currently Nvidia is only shipping limited numbers of Nforce 780i products and many dislike the fact that this very expensive board only supports DDR2.
The Nforce 790i has two new tricks. It supports DDR3 memory up to 1800MHz speeds and it supports FSB 1600 for the latest generation of Core 2 Extreme quad core CPUs.
This chipset will work just fine with 45nm Core 2 Quad processors and it should launch sometime in the middle of February, together with the GeForce 9600 GT.
