CES 2008:Hands on With Moto Z10 and ROKR E8

Gizmodo published some pictures and specifications of the much hyped Motorola's new phones ,Z10 and Rokr E8.They are innovative but not so much to be considered breakthrough technologies.

ROKR E8

The rokr E8 is the next gen of Moto's music player phone line. It has a smooth surface, no visible keys. ModeShift / morphing turns the device from phone to music player to camera. They've built in haptic feedback for tactile response when keys are pressed, and a navigation wheel above the touch pad. They also threw in an FM radio, 2GB of internal memory, expandable via MicroSD. USB 2.0 for fast song transfer. It's a Quad Band GPRS/EDGE phone.

Moto Z10

This one is a kick slider multimedia phone, with built-in video editing tools. The 2.2-inch QVGA screen displays video at 30fps, and in 16 million colors. External storage for up to 32GB, when it becomes available. So 8GB for now. 3.2 megapixel camera, which launches in 1.5 seconds-they made a big deal of this although the iPhone doesn't seem to take any longer to get into camera mode. It's3.5G HSDPA, GSM/GPRS/EDGE, for all that wireless video you're going to be uploading.

Motorola To Launch Next Gen Linux Based Handsets In 2Q 2008

Motorola plans to launch its next-generation Linux-based "Ming" handsets in the second quarter of 2008, with the hand input intelligence handsets to be available in both high-end and entry-level versions, according to market sources. Previously, the Ming was released only in a high-end version.

While Motorola's R&D center in Beijing will continue to handle the development of the high-end version of the new Ming handsets, the US vendor will outsource the production of the new entry-level Ming handsets to the Taiwan-based Inventec Group, according to the sources, who also noted that the new Ming handsets will continue to support the 2.5G standard.

Motorola on December 17 launched its high-end 3.5G RAZR V9 in Taiwan, and the company plans to introduce in Taiwan a Symbian-based ROKR Z8, Windows Mobile-based Q9 and three entry-level models, including the W360 and W213, before the end of this year, according to Bill Chen, general manager of of mobile device business at Motorola Taiwan.

Handsets supporting the 3G standard will account for 50% of all handsets sold in Taiwan in 2008, Chen projected.

Cell Makers Agree on a Single Charging Plug

Samsung, Motorola, Sony Ericsson, LG, and Nokia have agreed to use micro USB as a charging-plug standard for phones. Your days of buying a bagful of accessories every time you switch phones have come to an end. Well, not quite. You will still have to toss out all your mini USB chargers, as this decision in truth indicates a rejection of that budding de facto standard. Yep, all the carriers and accessories makers will have one last chance to profit before the standard is in place.
