Intel To Make WiFi/WiMAX/DVB-H Chip

Intel is developing a new chip that can handle WiFi, WiMAX and DVB-H digital TV.

This kind of chip would allow equipment to access the WiFi network in the home, automatically handover to a WiMAX network when you leave the house and also access digital TV on the move, all through one chip.“There is a shift from people wanting their content any time, anywhere to any device, any network, and the problem is there are too many radios,” said Jeff Hoffman, system architect for the wireless communications lab.

The chip tapes out next week and uses nine processing elements in different combinations to handle the three protocols. The processing elements are linked by a network on chip for the data and a control bus using the open OCP bus protocol with an ARC 605 configurable processor as the system controller. This has been extended with a 32 x 32 fast multiplier to handle the network access, and provides 303DMIPS of performance at 233MHz with just 17mW of peak power.

The test chip measures 24mm2 overall and consumes 79mW in receive mode at 52Mbit/s and 72mW in transmit, and links to three RF chips for the different networks.

iRadio Brings Streaming Radio to iPhone

iRadio, by Conceited Software, just received an update which brings it much closer to being a valuable iPhone app. The app is basically a SHOUTcast player for the iPhone that allows playing and browsing of thousands of online stations. The app works best under WiFi, but is not limited to it, and does work while using EDGE. There are still many quarks to be worked out, but for the most part, we are impressed with this early application, Gizmodo reports.

Nokia Unveils N82

Nokia has unleashed its new N82 phone.


This candy bar-shaped phone features a 5 megapixel digital camera with Carl Zeiss lens, autofocus and xenon flash. The phone has a 2.4" QVGA display and has many cool features like WiFi, GPS, WCDMA2100 (HSDPA), EGSM900, GSM850/1800/1900 MHz (EGPRS), 100MB internal memory, micro SD memory card slot, 3.5mm headphone jack, and many more.

The phone user Symbian S60 and has a standby time of up to 225 hours and talk time of up to 260 minutes with GSM.

The design looks pretty good but those buttons look quite small.The Nokia N82 will be available for 450EUR.

New IBM Video Transfer Technology 100x Faster Than WiFi

IBM says they are working together with MediaTek on a new chipset that can transfer HD video between PCs, TVs and other devices at phenomenal speeds:
IBM will do this by teaming with MediaTek to launch a joint initiative to develop these ultra fast chipsets that will let users rid their homes and offices of the cumbersome wires needed to connect their HD-TVs to set top boxes and or other devices.

The companies will be developing millimeter wave (mmWave) radio technology -- the highest frequency portion of the radio spectrum -- 60 gigahertz rather than 2.4 gigahertz -- and digital chipsets that enable at least 100 times higher data rates than current Wi-Fi standards, IBM said in a release. For example, users could upload a 10 gigabyte file in five seconds with the new technology versus 10 minutes using current Wi-Fi technology. mmWave wireless technology can be widely used at home and office for applications such as multimedia content downloads or uncompressed HDTV streaming from your DVD player. Users could wirelessly download and synchronize iPod-like devices with music and videos in seconds.

The companies will integrate IBM's new mmWave radio chips, antenna, and package technology with MediaTek's digital baseband and video processing chips.
